One number, many names
The post office calls it a consignment number, an article number, a tracking ID or a tracking number. They all mean the same 13-character code on your booking receipt, such as EE123456785IN. A mobile number, PIN code or the receipt's serial number won't work for tracking.
What India Post can track
- E…IN: Speed Post, including 24 and 48 Speed Post and Speed Post with registration.
- R…IN: Registered Post booked before September 2025.
- C…IN: parcels. L…IN: tracked letters and small packets.
- A number ending in letters other than IN, such as US or CN, was booked abroad. It still tracks here once it enters India.
- Ordinary letters, postcards and inland letters are not tracked.
Consignment details: what you'll see
Every scan has a date, a time, an office and an event: Item Booked, Item Bagged, Item Dispatched, Item Received, Out for delivery and Item Delivered. The official tracker and this page

What is a post office tracking ID?
It is the 13-character consignment number printed on your booking receipt: 2 letters, 9 digits and 2 letters, like EE123456785IN.
Can I do India Post tracking with my mobile number?
No. India Post tracks items only by the 13-character number. Check the booking SMS, or ask the sender for it.
How do I see the full consignment details?
Paste the number above. The Journey tab lists every scan by day, and the Route map tab shows the offices the item passed through.
Can ordinary letters be tracked?
No. Only booked services such as Speed Post, registration, parcels and EMS get a tracking number.
