About Registered Post
Registered Post is India Post's service for letters and documents that need proof of delivery. The receiver signs on delivery, which is why it's used for legal notices, bank letters and official documents. It's usually slower than Speed Post, because items travel with ordinary mail and are scanned at fewer points.
Registered Post number format
Same 13-character format as Speed Post: 2 letters, 9 digits, 2 letters. It usually starts with R and ends with IN. With acknowledgement due (AD), the signed card comes back to the sender separately.
Registered Post is now part of Speed Post
From 1 September 2025 India Post folded domestic Registered Post into Speed Post. When you book Speed Post you can add registration for ₹5 plus GST, and the item is then handed only to the person it is addressed to, or someone they authorise. Receipts from before the change, with numbers starting with R, still track exactly the same way in the box above. New registered items carry a Speed Post number that starts with E.
Questions
How long does Registered Post take?
Older R-numbered items often took 3–7 working days. Items booked as Speed Post with registration move at Speed Post speed, usually 1–4 working days.
Has Registered Post been discontinued?
Not exactly. Since 1 September 2025 it is offered as registration on Speed Post, for ₹5 plus GST per item. You still get delivery only to the addressee and proof of delivery.
Can I track Registered Post by mobile number?
No. Tracking needs the 13-character number from the receipt. If you are the receiver, ask the sender.
It says delivered but no one received it.
Visit the delivery post office with the number. Registered items are signed for, so the office can check who signed.
